OMG, Becky, Look at that Logo
If you have been in or around Gankstars for a while, you probably know about the logo saga - a journey that started over a year and a half ago. Many designers have taken a stab at creating a new logo for us. Many ideas have been considered, from space helmets to wild geometric shapes. Here is a taste, from the absurd to the quite good:
I’ve learned to sympathize with logo designers. Asking 10 people whether they like a logo nets at least 7 different responses. Some people, like myself, are quite bad at explaining what they want. When it comes to design, I know it when I see it, but I’m notoriously bad about explaining it beforehand. For all who worked with me on the logo - a heartfelt thank you for your patience.
At one point a member made the ultimate logo as a joke:
What Was Wrong with the Old Logo?
To be fair, the old logo had a great character. There was something about it that caused an emotional response, and that was important. It was recognizable and looked kind of badass at large scale.
However, it was too complex. It looked terrible at small scale. It was a pain in the butt to print on merchandise in any size other than BIG. Can you imagine it printed on a pen? Neither can I. There were other considerations, but complexity was #1.
Secret be told, the old logo was created in a few hours in PowerPoint. For the amount of time invested, it served us well.
But we needed a logo that looked good in any size and had a better aspect ratio (less wide).
We tried simplifying and changing the style of the old logo several times; but the old logo only works in its entirety. If you take an element out, it just seems incomplete.
Luckily, we were invited to be a part of a startup accelerator with R/GA and Verizon. R/GA is one of the top agencies in the country, and provides free services to the companies that go through their accelerator programs - from new logo to content & marketing strategy to even web site design. For us, they did the former two.
R/GA excels at corporate marketing. We were astounded to find out just how many of the best TV and online ads are their brainchildren. Think of some memorable TV ads, and there's a good chance R/GA created a handful of them.
However, esports was a new territory for them. We’re not your usual corporation that sells a product or service. We compete in tournaments, provide entertainment, and make content. We are a community, a home for people who love games.
The New Logo
It’s simple. The new logo looks great in both small and large. It’s 3D, yet recognizable if flattened.
One of the things we like the most about it is that it works as both a standalone logo and being a part of the full name.
It’s simple enough to look good next to logos of large brands, such as Verizon or ASUS. And yet it’s fun enough and has enough edge and character to look great next to esports and gaming company logos.
It can be clean (our default), or it can be slightly gory - for games where such style is appropriate, for Halloween, or for certain styles of merchandise! 👻 Check out these merchandise ideas idea, for example:
And it’s easily animatable! We’re going to have some fun with that.
